X Forces US Creators Onto Its Own Payment Rails

Instant payouts arrive, but Stripe is gone and opting out is not on the table.

The $30 minimum is gone. So is the two-week wait. As of Wednesday, every US creator getting paid by X receives the money the moment it clears, with no threshold and no billing cycle. The catch is that nobody asked to be moved, and nobody can move back.

X said all US creator payouts now run through X Money, its own payments service. That covers earnings from the Original Content Rewards Program and from paid subscriptions. A company representative confirmed the switch is mandatory in the US. Creators elsewhere stay on Stripe, at least for now.

The wording of X’s own announcement offers no alternative path, which is the part creators will feel. Faster money is welcome. Being told which account it has to land in is a different thing, especially for anyone who already reconciles income through Stripe.

The timing sits next to a bigger reshuffle. On September 7, the Creator Revenue Sharing Program shuts down. It stopped taking new members last month. Everyone still in it moves to Original Content Rewards, which puts more weight on original posts.

X Money is not a bank. Accounts sit at Cross River Bank, which is FDIC insured. The service rolled out in the US recently and began handling creator payouts earlier this month. It is the financial layer of Musk’s everything-app ambition, and creator earnings are what fill it. Here is what creators get on the other side:

  • Cash back: a bank card paying 3% back on purchases.
  • Instant access: money lands immediately, no cycle, no minimum.
  • Free withdrawals: ATM cash at no charge.
  • Higher yield: 6% APY for Premium users, 4% otherwise.

Creator payouts count toward the direct deposit requirement that unlocks the better rate. That is the quiet design. Getting paid by X and banking with X become the same act.

X will issue a 1099-NEC to individuals receiving payouts. Creators working through an LLC have to hand over W-9 details so the forms are accurate. Routine, but it is X’s paperwork now, not Stripe’s.

Instant payouts are a genuine upgrade, so the real question is what X asks of creators once it also holds the account.

If your revenue runs through a platform, the platform can change the rails without asking. US creators on X now have their income and their banking inside one company’s product, with tax reporting attached. Before the next payout cycle, decide how much of your business can sit in a single app, and where the backup lives.
