Photonic computing is gaining attention as technology companies and researchers explore ways to process information using light rather than relying entirely on traditional electronic signals. The approach could potentially improve processing speed and energy efficiency for demanding workloads such as artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

Unlike conventional electronic systems, photonic processors can transmit large amounts of information using optical signals. This makes the technology particularly interesting for AI workloads that require extensive data movement between processors and memory.

Businesses are closely watching photonic computing because growing AI adoption is increasing demand for specialised infrastructure that can deliver higher performance without proportionally increasing energy consumption.

Research and commercial development are progressing across optical interconnects, AI accelerators, and data center infrastructure. However, challenges around manufacturing, software compatibility, and integrating photonic components with existing electronics remain.
