OpenAI is changing the way users interact with ChatGPT by moving beyond its traditionally text-heavy experience. The company has introduced a new interface called Intelligent UI, designed to bring interactive visuals directly into conversations.
The feature is launching alongside OpenAI’s new GPT-6 model and is intended to make complicated subjects easier to understand. Instead of receiving paragraphs of text alone, users can now encounter diagrams, charts, calculators, maps, and other visual elements that can be manipulated directly within a conversation.
The change represents a broader shift in how AI assistants can present information. Rather than simply generating an answer, ChatGPT can increasingly create an interactive experience around that answer.
From Static Answers to Interactive Experiences
OpenAI says Intelligent UI can generate different visual components depending on what a user is trying to accomplish.
These may include interactive charts, editable graphs, task-specific calculators, diagrams, buttons, and other elements that allow users to engage with information rather than simply read it.
For example, someone learning how an airplane stays in the air could ask ChatGPT to explain how a wing generates lift. Instead of responding with a conventional written explanation, the system can create diagrams illustrating the airflow and forces involved.
The same approach could be useful across everyday tasks.
OpenAI demonstrated examples involving recipe planning, bicycle mechanics, hiking routes, and personal finance. A user planning a multi-day hike could receive a visual map, while someone reviewing their finances could interact with a calculator designed around their specific savings goal.
A New Approach to Learning
The educational potential may be one of the most important aspects of the update.
Some subjects are difficult to understand through text alone. Technical processes, scientific concepts, financial calculations, geography, and mechanical systems can often become clearer when information is represented visually.
OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan explained that the company sees this as an extension of ChatGPT’s purpose. While the chatbot has historically been dominated by text, many tasks require more than written explanations to be genuinely useful.
That could make ChatGPT more accessible to people who learn better through visual demonstrations or interactive examples.
The change also suggests that AI assistants may increasingly function as dynamic interfaces rather than conventional chat windows.
Users Can Control the Visual Experience
Not everyone wants every response filled with graphics, and OpenAI is accounting for that.
Intelligent UI includes customization options that allow users to reduce the amount of visual content appearing in responses. This gives people more control over how ChatGPT presents information based on their preferences and the type of task they are completing.
The rollout is also being introduced across different ChatGPT subscription levels.
The feature is becoming available globally alongside GPT-6 for Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise users. OpenAI plans to extend it to users on the free and Go tiers as well.
What This Could Mean for AI Assistants
The arrival of Intelligent UI points toward a future in which AI conversations become less about reading blocks of generated text and more about interacting with information.
A question about budgeting could produce a working financial tool. A science lesson could become an interactive diagram. A travel request could result in a visual itinerary or map.
That approach could make AI more useful for both learning and everyday decision-making.
The bigger shift is that ChatGPT is no longer limited to explaining what something is. Increasingly, it can create a visual environment where users can explore, calculate, compare, and interact with the answer itself.
If OpenAI can make these experiences reliable and intuitive, interactive interfaces could become an important part of how people use AI in the years ahead.
